Had an inquiry from a business owner that was concerned about his website’s position in the search engine, the following exchange shows that even a well optimised site needs regularly reviewing and website owners should be careful when uploading images to their blogs:
[Website Owner] Have you had any further thoughts on the website? It still isn’t showing anything sooner than page 3 for [key search term] and I think I’m missing out on quite a lot of possible work opportunities. I can’t understand how [my competitor’s] website is permanently on page 1 when they have half the pages and half the content of my site. Do you have any ideas?
[Delicious Webdesign] I can see how this would concerns you, had a good look at your website and ran some checks and found that your blog posts include images that are too big and should be optimised
The exact text from Google’s check is
Performance overview
On average, some pages in your site take 5.8 seconds to load. This is slower than 80% of sites.
Therefore you should optimise (reduce) these images before uploading
max images should be 800*600 px and about 100kb only (some of yours are over 1mb !)
We use photo resizer software to achieve this.
Page load speed has recently been talked about a lot by Matts Cutts at Google who have said it is a ranking factor, this ‘may’ be the reason for your relative low visitor numbers / ranking.
Your website age is now 4 years old which is good compared with comparable builders sites.
Looking at your stats compared with other people in your sector you have comparable visitor numbers but you have only 1/5 of the visitor numbers of other [websites] that are very optimised and that we have worked on. The websites we have compared you with are good matches for your website in terms of site age / size / link profile.
We have made some changes on site and have added another link to your site and you now have more links and more content than other sites that have more visitor numbers / rankings
Going forward my suggestions for you.
1, Reduce those massive images on your blog
2, Add more / regular blog posts – do this consistently – make sure text is unique.
3, Get as many links as you can to your site (ask other [similar business owners] to swap links with you)
4, Give us more testimonials from your clients
5, Create a Facebook Group or a Twitter account for your business and invite your friends and clients to join. Update these pages regularly with your news.
Other suggestions
1 Post on a forum that is related to your business or a general business forum relevant to your country / region.
2 Revisit every site you have ever joined and ensure your website is added to your profile.
3 Add a video on Youtube Video and then display it on your blog
4 One thing that is missing is image descriptions so please give us a description of each image on each gallery
