It is vital that the obvious things that the search engines would check when trying to decide what subject your site is aimed at, are all in alignment and don’t conflict with each other.

Rebalancing the homepage content, to make it clear what the main and subsidiary subjects are, is one of the key tasks that must be completed early on. Factors that we also consider are;

  • Google’s understanding of words that are related to each other
  • The overall length of the page
  • Formatting of certain words and phrases
  • Positioning of words and phrases
  • Optimising the keyword density
  • Too many occurrences can be regarded as spam
  • Too few instances can be regarded as not relevant enough

The key things to look for when assessing which links are contributing to the overall ranking power of your site are:

  • Is the site that is linking relevant to your target subject?
  • How strong is it in terms of PageRank?
  • How many other outgoing links does that page have, as that will dilute the effect it has
  • What is that site ‘recommending’ you for, via the anchor text?
  • Does that anchor text across all the links look natural?
  • If the link is actually missing when we ran the tool or it has a ‘no follow’ instruction to Google then it will not be helping (of course it may actually be bringing visitors through)
  • The red, amber and green squares in the final column give an indication of the effectiveness of each link.
