Web Image formats - GIF vs. JPEG
it's easy for less experienced photographers that are designing websites to use wrong the incorrect format for their image files. As a general rule If your photograph or image has small number of colors (possibly not more than 64) Then the GIF format proves to be a more efficient format. A good idea is to reduce your palette size to the minimum you can (32 or 16) before you start to see visible reductions in the quality of the image. Photoshop makes this processes easy in the 'save to web or devices' function.

As a general rule if your image contains textual content then the GIF format should be selected. This is due to the lossy compression used in the JPEG files that can result in text appearing slightly blurry and not crisp.

If you are saving a photograph for your web design then ensure you save it as JPEG and reduce the quality to just above a level where you can see the image start to deteriorate this will ensure your webpages load fast and look great

With the above 'rule' in mind it's possible to use JPG image format for photographic images with large typeface embedded within them. Although it's possible that the edges of the text may be slightly blurry it's unlikely that it will diminish the quality of the image too much. So there is a trade off against the choice of JPG and GIF files for the very common logo / banner heading that is used in most websites, which normally contain a main photographic image and text on it, if the photograph must make an impact then the JPG format is normally the better option. We all use Adobe Photoshop 10 / CS4 at Delicious Webdesign and we recommend it for any budding web designer that enjoys photography. Take a look at our logo Banner at the top of this page that has text embedded within a JPG, hopefully you will agree that the image makes an impact and the text looks reasonably crisp.
