Today we had to lodge our first domain name complaint with Nominet due to a competitor buying a domain name similar to one we use and putting abusive images on it. Here is a summary of our complaint:

Having owned and run Delicious Webdesign using the domain http://www.delicious-webdesign.com/ we have noticed a competitor that started recently has now purchased and uploaded abusive / misleading / confusing content to a similar domain name to our own in an attempt to disrupt our business. He has only used this domain name to confuse and disrupt my business, he has never used the name delicious webdesign and already two clients have accidentally gone to the domain and been upset at what they saw.

In summary I own and run http://www.delicious-webdesign.com/ but a local (same village) competitor has purchased a domain that is very similar to mine with the only purpose of this website seemingly to confuse / mislead / disrupt by using my company name.

The website I am objecting to has now removed the offensive content but is now offering the website for sale, I feel that as this company which purport to be a website design company are registered in the same town and they have no reasonable business case for buying a website name that is closely resembling Delicious Webdesign and then attempting to offer it for sale I believe this to be immoral and illegal and trust Nominet will remove this domain as it could indicate to my current / future clients that I have gone out of business if they stumble across a website bearing my company name that says ‘for sale’.

It needs to be noted that he same company that is attempting to blackmail us into buying a domain name that they have purchased that is exactly the same as our main website name but with a different TLD has also stolen ex-client’s websites when they requested to move to another website design company (ourselves) and they achieved this as the register all domains in their own name which is recognised as bad business practise and has led to lengthy legal cases in the past.

The above title is correct if you choose the correct one but unfortunately its all too easy to be contacted by a dodgy one and end up spending thousands of pounds with them and wasting your money and harming your website’s SEO. Every week get a client forward me information of that they are concerned about as they have been contacted by a SEO company that does a report on their website and then makes them doubt their own optimised website, here is the emails and report details from one recent websites with our own comments to highlight the misleading points

Let you know that after analysis of your website, we found that your website is not performing well in the Google organic search. [Delicious - well actually its performing very well and you clearly havent done any analysis of this website as you are sending a generic report to everyone]
Analysis Report:

1. Your Back links became spam [Delicious - what do you mean? this site has relevant links]
2. Your Social Media sites are not up-to-date [Delicious - Ironically I consider this site to be a model of correct social media use]
3. Your Keywords ranking has been declined [Delicious - Really? probably the most meaningless comment ever given]
4. Poor traffics [Delicious - You probably mean traffic and you cant tell if its good or bad]
5. Decreasing ROI [Delicious - and you would know what ROI means I assume]

Area of Improvement:

1. We will give you 1st page ranking on Google, Yahoo, Bing [Delicious - Promises promises]
2. Generate high quality links and improve your traffics [Delicious - Again you mean 'traffic' and how are you going to achieve this from your startup SEO company in India?]
3. Improve your page rank [Delicious - So grateful but why should you do that?]
4. Improve your sales and brand value [Delicious - Big claims from such a little fish]
5. Fix all technical issues of your website [Delicious - There are none so would be happy to hear what you find]
6. 100% satisfaction guarantee or your full money back [Delicious - I very much doubt you have ever given 100% satisfaction or given any money back]

As a SEO professional, I would like to suggest you give a chance to work on your website so our SEO expert will work on your website and give you the 1st page ranking with more ROI. [Delicious - so you are a SEO professional and you have an SEO expert to work on the site for 'more ROI' sounds great]

Get a Free Website Analysis Report in your Reply. [Delicious - How could my client resist?]

Q: Are any of those 5 points true?

To know the Performance of your website. Our expert team has developed WEBSITE AUDIT REPORT for your website. This report provides actionable suggestions to achieve the business objectives of your website. Some of the aspects covered in this audit report are:

1. How your site is performing in search engines. [Delicious - So I can expect to see a ranking report?]
2. How popular your site is on social platforms. [Delicious - Impressive I can't wait]
3. How your keywords are performing and who all are your competitors. [Delicious - This will be valueable SEO info]

For more details about our price, please visit our website [Delicious - your 'price' is something I need to know]
I suggest you, please go through the above details and reply back with your questions so we can discuss further.
I look forward to your reply.

[Delicious - Here is the text from the Website Analysis report sent as a PDF]

SEO Factors

Pages indexed by Google
105 pages indexex
The higher the number of pages indexed by Google, better the ranking in Search Engines.
Not Good [Delicious - 105 pages indexed is a pretty good number by most 'business brochure website standards]
It will be better if you add more quality pages on a regular basis for more visibility of your site. [Delicious - The client is doing this with her blog]

Domain Age
The older the domain, the better will be the ranking in SE’s.
registered 20th July 2011
Domain expires 20th July 2022
NOOT GOOD [Delicious - Registering 10 years in advance is the most you can do]
Try to extend your site registration for more visibility of your Website.

Reverse IP
Search Engines like clean and static IPs.
376 other sites hosted on this server
NOT GOOD [Delicious - Would you prefer the client has her own server?]
Go for a dedicated IP. It is good from Search Engine point of view.

GEO Meta Tags
Not Found
NOT GOOD [Delicious - next to useless for a single country targetting website with a country specific TLD]
Need to create the GEO Meta Tag and upload in Your Website.

Text-HTML Ratio
13.13%
GOOD
No action needed

Breadcrumb navigation
Breadcrumb Navigation makes it easier for users to navigate a site. It shows the user their current location on a site.
Not Found NOT GOOD [Delicious - Not needed or appropriate for this website]
Create the same in Your Website ASAP

Page Rank (PR)
Higher the PR, more the trust of visitors.
Google Page rank of 3
NOT GOOD [Delicious - you are a startup company with a pagerank of 1 but you choose to say our page rank of 3 isnt good, please explain]
Try to improve the page rank

Cache
It supports deep crawling of your site.
Cached on 17 Apr 2013
NOT GOOD [Delicious - This was 9 days ago so whats the problem?]
Update your site regularly by using Google webmaster tool.

Keywords
Need to target one or two keywords per page. So page needs rearrangement of keywords.
Found
Average [Delicious - The only average thing here is your choice of website analysis factors]
It is better to use some targeted keywords to improve visibility of your website.

Headings
Brief and relevant headings are highly considered by Search Engines.
Not Found
Not GOOD [Delicious - All page headings are optimised]
It is better to use keywords in headings to improve Keyword Ranking.

How we can help with Natural Search Engine Rankings:
There are 3 stages to the process:
1. Agree to the list of keywords
2. Make some changes to the existing website
3. Start an inbound link building and SMO campaign

We get a lot of enquiries from people not happy with their current website designers and those part time designers from Stanford-le-Hope and Corringham that are now going missing or not replying to their clients are giving the website design industry a bad name due to their poor design skills and lack of even basic customer service. If you want a professional company to look after your companies main online asset (its website and its promotion) then get in touch, to demonstrate a sample enquiry we may get about this see below:

[Website Owner] Hi there would just like to modernise my website and not sure which way to go? would like some advise and help please on my Existing website which was build by a corringham website design company that we are not happy with now as they simply do not respond or if they respond then take ages to make any changes that we request.

[Delicious Webdesign] Just had a ‘quick’ review of your site (it is late and it is Sunday evening) and believe that perhaps ‘modernising’ the site isn’t the real reason that the site needs attention but perhaps a full redesign could be tackled with a view to making your site more ‘search engine friendly’ meaning it should be created with the view that it needs to look / work great but also the main purpose of the site will be to attract potential customers.

Like everything in life their are choices and decisions to make to get to the final product and perhaps at this stage you dont realise the power that your website could give you and your business. Luckily we are expert at bringing potential customers to your website and have electricians, roofers and builders all very highly ranked for their key search terms.

If this ‘ramble’ sounds good and you think we could do a good job for you (we could) then perhaps reply with what you have in mind for any redesign and we can either chat via email or on the phone (as I see your in Suffolk) to get you website working for you.

We notice that your previous website designers have made some basic and silly mistakes on the site and this has been adversely affecting your site / business for some time due to the severity of the errors, be assured that we will produce you a professionally designed and tested website that will enhance your business.

Quite happy with our recent ‘going the extra mile’ for a client project. A client that didnt backup his data gave us his old hard drive that was removed from his old Laptop and told us that the computer technicians that took it out said all his data was lost and his data was 10 years worth of photos / documents and music (80GB). We offered to see if we can rescue the data on the corrupt hard drive and initially the disk wasnt readable in our hard drive caddys but we kept trying it in different Hard Drive Caddys and found own that let us read one partition of the disk, unfortunatly it was a partition with computer system files on it and no personal data on it. After trying various partition recovery software and disk rescue utilities we found one that could backup the corrupted data on the unreadable disk partition where the personal data was stored. The backup was restored and we have put all the photos, documents and music on a new hard drive that will plug in via USB to his new laptop. We have probably spent 8 hours on this problem for our client and am always happy to help our clients with technical issues regarding their PC / Laptop / Smartphone / Tablet, to say the client is happy is an understatement and he now backs up his data regularly.

Recently saw an old friend and neighbour start to post photos of houses that he had renovated and had got lots of favourable comments for his work but when asked for business / website details he had none so contacted him to try to tell him how easy it could be to get himself online and found that he is actually in a perfect position to start thinking about builiding a business for the future as he is currently only doing his business part time while employed.

[Delicious Webdesign] Hi I see you posting pics of your work on Facebook – if you ever want a website we specialise in buiders websites and be good to help you get started in business.

[Essex Builder] Hi how’s things? Yeah I may be interested in the future as its my dream to own an Essex Building Company, it sound great but need to get myself a bit of a bigger portfolio together however could also advertise for the work and designs done by myself?? What does it cost to have websites designed??

[Delicious Webdesign] All good thanks and its good to see your doing some good impressive building work – regarding the site you have loads of options – search for ‘essex builders; in google.co.uk and we have 5 in the top 10 of the ‘natural / organic’ rankings as they have got us to build their website and promote it and they have continued to update it over the months years. Basically for a standard business brochure website like you need being a building company you have 4 main options on website ‘flavour’ (size and inclusions) and then there are other options like webcopy (text for the website) that you will need to think about. Like most things once you have found a good business (us) the more you pay the more you get but you can pay as little as £400 for a 4 page website but normally you need to have a bigger / better website to stand a change of ranking highly in your sector in the search engines (Google, Bing and Yahoo)

[Essex Builder] Ok well it sounds good but will have to wait until the near future. I would not feel confident starting up a business incase I fail. I have done fairly well to get where I have and would not like to jeopardise what I have built just yet. I work on my own buying repo properties and renovating to a high standard, but also paying people i know for electrical work, plastering, and plumbing. the rest i do myself. i then rent them out at top market value. I have 4 at the moment and hopefully the 5th in July?

[Delicious Webdesign] Thats impressive – you needed worry about jepordising anything though as you dont need to be a limited company to start a website and the older the website the better for it in the search engines, so perhaps your in a great position to think about starting a website now.

[Essex Builder] l will have a think. I could always advertise the work and price it up paying the people to do the jobs I can’t. You reckon around £400-500? Because I do this work in my spare time. I hold down a full time job working 4days on/off. On my off days I do this. And it’s tiring!

[Delicious Webdesign] You should also be aware that just by having a website you dont instantly get lots of emails / calls for work and its good advice to get a website up and running 1-2 years before you think about having a business yourself as you can always pass on the work if you get calls and cant take it on, a lot of businesses start with a new website and expect to be innundated with work from day one and that never happens so perhaps you are in a great position now to plan and build a website with us while you are not in need of immediate work.

[Essex Builder] Oh right, that’s an interesting point. So it’s maybe a good idea to understand exactly what I want to achieve and what i want to offer, create a website now aiming to peak in a couple of years. I don’t have the money at the minute because as you are aware I have just finished a renovation but would be something of interest in the future. If I have the guts to do it I will do it.

[Delicious Webdesign] Ok lets get together at some time and let me understand your situation fully then let me show you what you can do for the budget you have available

We get lots of requests for work from junior develpers and from time to time give some potential developers a task to evaluate a website and / or create some logos for us, here is an sample evaluation and reply which also goes to show that different people can view a website in different ways, as a coincidence he picked a website that was started but never completed (due to the client running out of money for his website so most comments are valid)

[Essex Website Designers] Thanks for you email, your cv seem very professional and your passion is clearly shown, as a mini test can do one (or all) of the following to ensure you are of the correct calibre of candidate for us.

1, Using photoshop create a quick / simple logo to replace this site’s logo
2, Using photoshop create a quick / simple logo just using the name of the website
3, Look through one of our own websites on one on the porfolio pages and give us some recommendations to improve the design or SEO of the site, once we see we what your ideas are perhaps we can take this further

[Junior Website Designer / Developer] Thank you for the fast response. I appreciate your feedback. Attached are my versions of the logos in various formats as you didn’t specify.

I have looked at your website Silent Bubbles and these are the improvements I would make:

Make a more varied gradient for the background and align the image behind the main text to the right, fading to transparent towards the bottom and left, or remove it completely.

Align the header background with the body instead of having it run all the way across the top of the page.

Attempt to make the main body of text more concise and if this was not possible I would add a seperate page for further information as it is quite lengthy and doesn’t look very clean. I think that a clean and simple aesthetic would suit a website relating to water and the sea.

I would put the images and the news feed on the left hand side of the page underneath the menu. This would provide more space for the text and allow the page to be shorter.

The image of bubbles in the logo is cut off on the right hand side.

A few other pages have a lot of empty space at the bottom of the page which isn’t needed.

There seem to be a lot of menu items. I would move all of the information on each sub-menu item of the ‘About’ menu item on one page as I think the seperate pages are unneccesary and look messy.

I would space out the top menu further so it is justified in relation to the central column.

The image which seems to be used as a sort of background that I metioned earlier looks incredibly messy and I don’t like the aesthetic of the image on the left with a ring of people. I would either use this as a background for the left menu, lower the opacity and set a downwards transparency gradient to make it blend with the text of the left menu. If this didn’t look very nice then I may remove the images altogether and replace the background gradient with an image of rippled water or something similar so that it wouldn’t be too boring.

If I am completely honest SEO is something that I know very little about so I am not very well equipped to suggest improvements, however it is something I have considered and I will be creating an e-portfolio for myself soon to share my computer and music skills so it is something that I will have to consider anyway and I do intend to learn more about that area of web design. I do believe that, although there is plenty for me to learn from the web design industry I would find it quite an easy process once I have become familiar with the techniques so I don’t think I would require much instruction in that area.

I have worked on testing out several different concepts with the owner of that domain over the last couple of years, helping her to build them and see how they are received by the public. Currently there isn’t much of a design on there as we’ve had to put our most recent idea on hold so we haven’t been able to do any work since the end of summer last year. We did have a website set up as a sort of private chat network and classified ad directory running as a facebook app at that URL but unfortunately the server was attacked and we lost a lot of data. I have been testing out different colour schemes and layouts for the portfolio I mentioned previously. I was originally planning to just use it for music, hence the logo. Again, this isn’t really much of a site as I’m just testing ideas and I’ve been a bit pre-occupied with looking for work and trying to actually practice the skills I will be displaying on the site. I have only been doing it for an hour or two here and there so I’ve probably only spent about a day actually playing with it. If there is anything in particular you would like to see then I will make some time and let you know when the site is updated. Both are built on Joomla.

I am also working on a permaculture network with a few people however we only came up with the concept early this year so we aren’t really ready to publish a website. I have written a contact form in html for the website and I have started on the php however that is something I am not so familiar with so I want to wait until I have more time to absorb the process a bit better. I’ve also been playing around with a basic template idea in html, just a floating header, sidebar and footer for when we are happy with the concept. I think that we are going to have to write a lot of that site in javascript though to suit our needs and we are unable to do that until we know exactly what we are doing, so that is another project that’s sort of in limbo at the moment. All of the files for that are stored on my computer though.

Even after we build your website and its launched in the search engines we still give it periodic reviews and here is an example list of updates / recommendations we gave one website after a brief review the other day, this is to give you an indication of the level of service you will expect to receive when you get your website with Delicious Webdesign.

Website updates / improvements after a 3 month review of your website:

1 Blog - Your images have been tidyed up on the post that was not correct due to images not aligned correctly
2 Blog – All uploaded images were massive (5MB and 4000px wide) this is not good and when clicked will confuse the user, you must resize images before uploading (recommended size is 800px wide)
3 Blog -All uploaded images on the blog have been resized and re-uploaded for you
4 Google Local - Recently we applied to Google for your local listing and have supplied all the details of your company and to authenticate this they will send you a postcard with a code within it – as soon as this arrives please send me (via email or text) the code and your listing will be put live. If it takes more than 2 weeks then tell us and we will get them to re-send it
5 Sitemap – Due to the new pages created we have updated your sitemap and submitted it to Google
6 Google- have requested that google ‘re-crawl’ your website to pick up the new pages.
7 Blog – You must put every post in a relevant category.
8 Blog – When creating categories be careful not to create sub-categories when not required (company news was a subcategory of party food ?) – We have changed your posts to be in relevant categories.
9 Links – have asked Google to disavow some of the older links that look like they were created by your old dodgy SEO company as they are on not appropriate websites.
10 Google Adwords – Google Adwords – Recommend we have an advert per service and to re-evaluate the keywords / phrases used for your existing ‘main’ services already within adwords – Therefore we need 12 ‘Ad Groups’ and should use all the functionality of the Adwords system to ensure you get the best / most relevent adverts – Expect this should take 4-5 hours.
