Web Redesign Information

Posted on April 30th, 2012 by james  |  Comments Off

If you take a look at our website portfolio of our most recent portfolio you can see the quality of our work. We have already done
Essex Photography and wedding websites before so understand your  business.

We can do a complete redesign of the website or modify the existing design. Whichever we do will positively affect the ranking with the search
engines as the new changes will improve the site. Normally if  domain name changes ownership, if you buy an existing website then  ranking will not be affected.

Regarding SEO. This comes in two parts, firstly is optimisation on the website and second is building links to the website. The website
optimisation is done by us whichever package you have. We do offer link building to your website however this is expensive as it is time
consuming so you may be better off doing it yourself if your budget is tight. Do you want me to send through the list of the packages that we offer or do you think
this is something you could do yourself? (It’s as easy as going onto website directories and forums and placing links to your website).

You can keep your existing hosting if you want. Any emails you have saved would be lost if you transferred hosting unless you download
them to a mail program such as Outlook before the switchover.

Website Review Comments

Posted on April 9th, 2012 by james  |  Comments Off

Just for fun I reviewed some of our Website / SEO comments about websites we have been asked to comment on:

Hi, not sure if you can help us but I see you must be part of the business but since we have been asked to do the redesign and SEO of the website all email and phone contact has gone unanswered – we are trying to get in touch with anyone at the business regarding the website / outstanding invoices that we have – can you reply with an email address that I can use please as there is much more SEO work to complete.

Adding content is the key, so keep blogging, but there is loads of other things to do, you can do a lot yourself or get us to do some SEO on your website. If you have targeted keywords then we can work on that ranking for you. You also have the possibility to advertise on google (google PPC / Adwords) but that is a short term measure and can work out expensive.

Google have changed their algorithm to be more ‘content’ focused so with your big / unique websites, blogs and Facebook / trip advisor / twitter you are going in the right direction.

They have made a MASSIVE seo mistake – not going to go into it but whoever done this are COMPLETE amateurs ! they can design ok but they have about 10% the knowledge about SEO they should have.

They claim that they worked for Microsoft before, Hosted by Microsoft and one of there sites that they recently designed is getting 700 Visits per day and it has only been launched 3 months!

Its functional but full of errors and terrible SEO.

I think it is so important for a website to be easy on the eye though and not too busy.

They are the kind of website when I was doing my research I opened looked briefly at the front page and then couldn’t be bothered to go inside.

You have nothing to worry about in terms of competition – that site will never do that well in your competitive market, unless they have tonnes of money and years of time available to promote and market the site.

I saw a fair bit of matching text on their front page with yours but the good news is that is fine – Google knows everything. Its actually in your interest to let them leave your webcopy /  text on their website.

Forgetting about the looks the SEO is poor to average – flashy designs never wins over ‘holistic’ website design.

Not sure what updates you are talking about but probably its not going to be on there if the website isn’t updated with anything you have that iss new – would appreciate you looking at the website pages and if not correct you can suggest design and SEO improvements.

Having both the .com and the co.uk domains for your website is a good SEO practise as you have owned them both for some time we will ensure that both have unique content and re-directing one to the other will not be as beneficial as having both domains (long term).

Regarding your Youtube account. Good / assume you have your own youtube channel – now fill it with interesting and good building videos.

If you have time I will explain further about the SEO options and the domain choices you have with the two of them.

Your website ranking has increased but  more importantly so has visitor numbers (you are up over 120% month on month from 2011 – hope this translates to more enquiries and business for you, plenty of room to improve and having a twitter / facebook account can only help, make sure you fill in all your details on facebook / twitter especially adding your website as I cant see it on facebook and can’t find your account on twitter. I have ‘liked’ your facebook page.

Regarding an SEO program to increase your rankings, think we can schedule the work at the end of next month and continue for 3 months with 4 hours per week for three months which will fulfil the time requirements for our full SEO program. This is a huge amount of work to promote your website and will cost the agreed amount for the full 3 month program and will include new content / articles that will be written and put on other websites (article marketing). If you want to promote your website(s) but dont want to spend that amount of money then we can work on an hourly basis on your website or can do cut down SEO program for 1 month.

Website Reviews

Posted on April 9th, 2012 by james  |  Comments Off

Just a few comments we recently made for our client’s to help them think about their websites and how they can improve them:

1, Old website written with Tables with an outdated CMS system -  Converting the old table code would be one thing I would suggest needs doing but on its own I see this as not the best use of any time / money spent on the site – the Site now has an outdated CMS system that isnt SEO friendly and has a wordpress site that doesn’t look / work like the rest of the site – going back to the original ‘Final’ SEO review the recommendations are still the same – I would suggest a full redesign / rewrite which would enable your site to work without Flash (so it looks and works on non-flash enabled browsers, Iphones and Ipads) Your CMS system is a big handicap for you and the sooner its removed / updated the better for you. You can have a ‘static’ website with a customised wordpress blog or you can have the whole site put within wordpress to allow you to update each page easily.

2 Website not on Google Places -Have you done anything in the past to upset Google? We have re-reviewed the places entry and its 100% correct, I have changed a few things around so its exactly the same as other phuket dive companies that I have got working, one thing that you can do is go to your google places entry (google account) and move the ‘marker’ to your exact location (street map), your details are correct and almost identical to similar phuket based companies that show up so I really dont know why its not working for you. We really have gone out of my way to get this sorted indeed the listing is live and is working but not showing when you search for anything meaningful on maps (apart from your website name) its possible that Google have penalised you for something – so the listing is live and showing but we need it showing when you search for scuba diving in phuket and similar – you know I have got other Phuket and UK Dive companies Google Places so there should be no doubt that we know what we are doing.

We have asked one of your clients to add a review of the places listing and we added another photo and also added a question to Google’s Webmaster help section and hope to get a Google Employee to phone me back as I spoke to them on the phone today and they said they would get someone from ‘Google Places’ to phone me back to discuss my problem.

3, Website on a customised CMS System needing some TLC – Just had a update / review of the site – seems you have fixed the paypal button now, my observations / changes, all can be tweaked / removed as you see fit.
1, updated title banner – made the text on it an image using photoshop, the grey better matches the photo but the blue font can be used if you prefer
2, changed font on some text in shipping page to match the rest of the page.
3, Checked paypal buttons all ok
4, As you are using a customised CMS system (Jimdo) its not possible to change the code to make it w3c compliant
5, changed text on links page
6, added idc-guide as a link on links page
7, added relevant page title – used a generic title that should attract more search traffic (previously page titles were simply ‘tibby adapters’
8, the settings dont allow changes to different page titles but only create one ‘generic’ page title (this is not good)
9, added my website design company link

Additional thoughts about website -
Submit a free advert / article to put on the IDC Guide news page as this will be valuable for you.
I believe the site is not flexible enough to allow customisation for code or for SEO technical stuff and would advise moving to a ‘standard’ website. We can do this we can copy the complete website as it is and transfer it to ‘standard’ website, you would need to organise the transfer with jimdo – it will take about 2 hours for us to do the transfer (may need a new contact form also)

Website Design Project Plan

Posted on December 1st, 2011 by james  |  Comments Off

This example project plan has been created and included to give our clients direction and advice about some of the detail that we welcome from new clients requiring a website. Obviously we can work with a lot less information but the following project specification is a good example of and ‘ideal’ project plan that could be sent to us for a website design quote for an Essex based business.

Website Design and Development Build Project Plan

1.     SCOPE OF WORK

Our Client requires the design agency to produce a new graphical design, assets and HTML template pages for a redesigned white site.

The design and templates will be used by our clients existing Java web application.

The integration of the templates to the existing application will be performed by our client and is outside the scope of this RFI.

Our aim is to set a new benchmark for simplicity, clarity to the customer, ease of use and ease of integration with partner website and aggregator sites.

To confirm what drives the business written on the motor website we feel that a detailed explanation of the avenues that are currently used is relevant so a full understanding is obtained.

The current site was designed for direct data entry, i.e. clients being directed to the site and typing in risk details, consisting of a small number of questions asked and a large proposition of ‘assumptions’. Our client has reviewed their whole question set and after having internal workshops and reviewing the market now realise that a complete change is required.

Recently there has been a dramatic increase in Aggregator business (price comparison websites such as confused.com), so two entry streams must be possible:-

  • Client referred via an aggregator site/or other referral site
these customers will already have input quote details and which are carried through to our site from the aggregator.
  • Client comes direct
These customers would start on the site of the affinity partner

Ability to Rebrand.

The refreshed white site template must be designed so that rebranding is easily done and it must also be able to cater for the existing brands.

A rebrand could consist of font, colour, header, footer and graphic changes (this is a non exhaustive list and more brandable features are better).A rebrand must be simple to implement with basic web development skills For example, currently buttons are not graphics based but rather rendered using css styles which make the rebranding easier.

The rebranding should be primarily controlled through CSS, and also by including brand specific header and footer sections.

 Web Refresh Requirements

White site template restyle

  • Existing flow for question set remains as is however all questions are asked up front and removal of the assumptive nature of the site.
  • Changes of graphics (images and position)
  • Fonts and colours may change
  • Static text will change
  • Redesigned page layout
  • New landing page which will work as an up sell interface / marketing adverts

The above list is non-exhaustive and responses need not be bound by this list. We are open to new opinions and thoughts.

Dynamic selection boxes

  • Ajax Controls – e.g. Occupation, when you start typing occupation, the list of possible values reduces the further into the word you go

Error Handling

  • The current way that the errors are displayed could vary. The removal of pop up boxes needs to be addressed with possibly replacing them with a new window
  •  Both the way errors are highlighted and error text is shown could change

Help Text

  • The way help text is selected and displayed needs to be amended
  • Possible constraint – accessibility was a consideration – requiring now the ability to tab into the help text

Up sell interface

  • A Gold, Silver, Bronze add-on structure is required. The graphical interface for selection of these needs to be designed.
  • Our client’s add ons include Legal Protection; Key Protection Cover; Breakdown Cover and Personal Accident Cover.

Websites we like

A list of websites that are liked by us will be sent shortly

Features we like

The following list is non-exhaustive and we are open to suggestion and guidance from the selected provider. However our internal workshops and external feedback on our current web application from a range of sources has suggested the following ‘key features’ or key areas where our site could be improved;-

  • Websites with a customer friendly ‘aggregator landing page’
    • Which prominently display the price per month
    • Which can display the logo of the aggregator site
    • Which can display product features and benefits
    • Which can display customer details so that the customer is aware the quote is correct
    • That are no more than 3 pages from the ultimate card payment screen
  • Websites which carry variable sales messages throughout the site
    • Eg affinity sites will carry a car insurance promotion but details of this promotion are not carried through the quote application form
  • Websites with clear progress trackers ‘crumb trails’
  • Websites with good facilities to allow customers to retrieve a quote
  • Websites which allow customers to ask questions (via email)
  • Websites which have consistency and clarity of button styles throughout
  • Websites which make it easy for customers to buy additional products (add ons)
    • Sites which clearly promote the benefits of these add ons

Technical Requirements

 Accessibility

Our current websites contain a foot link to a page detailing the sites accessibility credentials, this still needs to be on all our websites

Java Script

Some of our affinity partners demanded that their sites had to work without java script enabled. This still need to be technically catered for. Alternative versions of the site would need to be rendered where java script is used for example to implement AJAX controls. If possible the site should be developed to work in both scenarios. (This will have cost implications we are aware and may reduce usability if java script is disabled.) When accessing the aggregator with a java script disable a page is shown instructing the user to enable java script if they wish to access the website. This will still need to be shown.

Browser Compatibility

Currently the sites are designed to work on the following browsers: IE5.5, IE6 & IE7.

We require the new solution to have the following compatibility at a minimum IE6, IE7, IE8, IE9, Safari, Firefox and Chrome.

Delivery channel Compatibility

Minimum compatibility should be; Ipad, Iphone, Android, PC, Macintosh

Ajax Controls

These are feature rich controls such as suggesting a narrowed down list of occupations as the user starts to key in their occupation. These features require, however, java script to be enabled.

Standards

The latest W3C web standards should be used to render the pages.

Search Engine Optimisation

We welcome your feedback on this point.

Design Agency Deliverables

Our client is suggesting a staged delivery approach. This will help us to identify any technically unsuitable or high cost to implement designs at an early stage.

Stage 1 – Performed by design agency

Graphical Design. This will enable our client to select the style for the site.

Stage 2 – Performed by design agency

The design will be mapped to HTML template pages. There will be a template for each page variation. For example, a question page, a quotation page, payment page, an informational page, etc.

This stage will prove that the design is implementable. Test pages for each template should be hosted in a test area of the design agency server for access by our client

The deliverable will include:-

  • Layered PSD for all web assets
  • HTML pages for every template page. This must include working:

Rollover functionality

Ajax Controls

Error handling example

JavaScript

Style Sheets

Stage 3 – HTML Pages

Based on the page templates from stage 2, our client will map questions to each page and provide the design agency with Visio diagrams.

The Design agency then takes those Visio wireframes and creates HTML: pages for the full site

Website Reviews

Recent review we done for a client, to give you an idea of the first brief overview we give.

What did we do?
• Built a list of keywords
• Searched for each keyword
• Ranked every website found

Well, what an excellent site! I’m attaching the summary of the scores, and a presentation format that gives you the highlights / most significant points.

In short, it comes up well, and against the competitors you spoke of too, although when you look into the detail, you will see a point that says ‘Ranks poorly on search engines’. Check the spreadsheet – what this is referring to is that although you may well be #1 for the main search terms, there are a number of other search terms in your meta tags that are not so strong in the search engines, to such an extent that I might query the value of having them at all. Some are simply far too broad / generic to be of value (‘exam’, ‘course’, ‘instructor’….) and others just not registering on Google (‘padi instructor courses’)

In terms of what additional actions you could do, a few points emerge around driving more traffic to the site and converting it:

Social Media. You have a Facebook page but no Twitter presence (or if you do, we couldn’t find it linked to the site). Given the nature of what you do, I would have anticipated that Social Media could help you quite a lot
PPC – I can see too that you have a PPC ad, but the results from it look like a testing of the water (pardon the obvious pun). Again, I might expect that PPC could drive additional traffic to the site. That said, I wouldn’t include the Google AdSense on your front page, if at all – I appreciate you are advertising dive companies, but it risks site visitors clicking through and away from your site and affecting your own conversion
More user ‘engagement’ features, building on (a) video and (b) your instructor profiles. I would suggest too thinking about what the actual conversion goal of the site is (Filling in the Contact Form?) and making this more prominent, and structuring the content to guide site visitors to this goal. Also link your analytics to it

Regarding Your lack of Twitter account

What could I do on Twitter?
• Talk to users directly
• Spread word of your site
• Build a marketing asset

Why should I care about social Media like Twitter and Facebook?
• Over 600m social users
• 22% of all time online
• Impacts SEO
• Impacts credibility

Why is the Freshness of a website important?
• Positive effect on search
• Positive effect on users

Summary
Substantial amount of content
Occasionally shared socially
Writing is quite easy to understand
Quick to load
Analytics is used
Updated regularly

additionally some technical points for consideration for the SEO of the website

Will the points below be possible? I consider point 1, especially, to be very important in terms of the SEO of the site. The title of any page is agreed upon by SEO experts as the number 1 on-page ranking factor and having all pages ‘diluted’ with the standard index page title text cannot be beneficial for long-tail searches.

1, Is it possible to not have the main website title added to the end of the product name to form each page title (on every product page) Currently all page Titles on the products pages are made up of the product name + page title from ‘website promotion and marketing’ options.
This dilutes the page title unnecessarily and normally makes the title longer than the 60-70 chars that is recommended

2, There are a couple of html errors within the framework (not closing a specific function, not giving type type=”text/javascript” to the javascript function, incorrect parameter for align command, not closing a function). These are not user / admin accessible and was wondering if they would be easy to fix (we know that xhtml / css compliance is a small factor but better to comply than not and these may cause display probs on some browsers)

3, Additionally to point 1 I see that the description and keywords meta data has a similar setup whereby the main description and keywords are added on to the end of the individual descriptions and keywords, is there a way to change this or opt out of it.

If you wish to give us a call to follow up on any points, please do

Recent client commments
This proves that professional webcopy is important on your website.
I’ve had a good look at your websites. I’ve been really impressed with the standard of your work on these websites, but please permit me to say that your wording perhaps doesn’t do justice to all your good work, so, knowing you’ve paid good money to set these up I would like to offer my services of literacy to your site. I’m quite angry with your PA / administrator that created the webcopy but not the website people (as its not their job) for actually allowing some of the spelling mistakes to get through. Have a read of what I’ve written for you, see if you like it, and you be the judge as to whether or not to use it, please do use it though, because potential customers might be put off by the wording and phrasing as it is.

Fix or Resign your website?

Posted on September 17th, 2011 by james  |  Comments Off

This is  decision a lot of website owners have after a period of time or after they re-evaluate their current website after comparing it with their competitors. The Website Design Industry rarely stands still and there is always something new to consider and add to a website and new ways to enhance the website to make it rank more highly, so its worth getting  a review of your website by a professional (or a selection of professionals) on a yearly basis.

Here is a conversation I recently had that demonstrates the ‘silly cheap prices’ and crazy expectations that some people have in regards to their website. If something is too cheap to be believed then there is always a problem. You may ‘think’ you are saving money but you are actually going to cost yourself money long term in lost business opportunities and the extra time it takes you to get it righ.

[Website Owner] We currently have a website with a few problems as listed below, I have already had ‘offers’ from some companies and the main suggestion seems to uplift the current information onto  new site which will then replace the existing one this will improve the poor images (and make it more mobile friendly) and I have the best offer so far of £125.

I am happy to go down this route but there is also a suggestion of hosting and SEO work to hold and improve Google listings from £39 plus vat a month.  I quote prices not for you to try and beat them (I know cheapest is not usually the best) but to give you an idea of where we are at currently and if you are going to be way off the mark we will not waste each other’s time.  Hope to hear from you soon with a rough price and timescale.

Details of current website
Main website is working ok-ish but in messing around with it some things have suffered as I list below.

The website Designer has the headers correct when viewed in chrome but not on other pages where it does not show some text which can be seen when mouse drags over text to left of prices.
On all headers in internet explorer the drop down menu under instructor training actually appears left of page
I would like to include a payment page but again some text does not show up. I have a merchant account where I can take payments but not integrated into the website as yet.

Lastly I am told the meta tags are not set up correctly for Google to access (possible site map also required) so needs to be tweaked. If it proves too difficult to do then a new website will be considered .

[Delicious Webdesign] I fear that anyone quoting £125 to redesign your site is either naive or incompetent. As you stated we would be ‘wasting our time’ if you expected a premium service for such a cheap and unrealistic price. Your website, after a 10 minute review, has lots and lots of problems and coupled with a redesign we couldnt even consider a redesign and SEO for anywhere near that price. Your site is very good in terms of ‘content’ and would actually love to take on a drive instruction company as we havent got one on our portfolio yet, We think we could increase your visitor numbers hugely with a redesign and SEO but we are an established company with a long track record of success to charge ‘industry rates’

Take a look at our package options and take a look at our SEO package on the website Both are ‘flexible’ and easily tailored to your requirement but fear you may be expecting a website design company to work only a few hundred pounds, if in any doubt at some of our SEO credentials by previous results

To address your final point about ‘ it proves too difficult to do then a new website will be considered ‘ as your website is coded very poorly in ‘tables’ using inline CSS then a redesign is really the only way to correctly move forward. Had a client the other talk about their old website and the choice between ‘fixing’ and redesigning and the way I described it to them is that they now have a very old car that is going to cost them lots in repairs for years to come unless they upgrade now, updating and fixing websites is fine but after a certain time there needs to be a decision when its not ‘economically viable’ to continue ‘fixing’ it.
