Website Reviews

Posted on November 22nd, 2011 by James  |  Comments Off

Recent review we done for a client, to give you an idea of the first brief overview we give.

What did we do?
• Built a list of keywords
• Searched for each keyword
• Ranked every website found

Well, what an excellent site! I’m attaching the summary of the scores, and a presentation format that gives you the highlights / most significant points.

In short, it comes up well, and against the competitors you spoke of too, although when you look into the detail, you will see a point that says ‘Ranks poorly on search engines’. Check the spreadsheet – what this is referring to is that although you may well be #1 for the main search terms, there are a number of other search terms in your meta tags that are not so strong in the search engines, to such an extent that I might query the value of having them at all. Some are simply far too broad / generic to be of value (‘exam’, ‘course’, ‘instructor’….) and others just not registering on Google (‘padi instructor courses’)

In terms of what additional actions you could do, a few points emerge around driving more traffic to the site and converting it:

Social Media. You have a Facebook page but no Twitter presence (or if you do, we couldn’t find it linked to the site). Given the nature of what you do, I would have anticipated that Social Media could help you quite a lot
PPC – I can see too that you have a PPC ad, but the results from it look like a testing of the water (pardon the obvious pun). Again, I might expect that PPC could drive additional traffic to the site. That said, I wouldn’t include the Google AdSense on your front page, if at all – I appreciate you are advertising dive companies, but it risks site visitors clicking through and away from your site and affecting your own conversion
More user ‘engagement’ features, building on (a) video and (b) your instructor profiles. I would suggest too thinking about what the actual conversion goal of the site is (Filling in the Contact Form?) and making this more prominent, and structuring the content to guide site visitors to this goal. Also link your analytics to it

Regarding Your lack of Twitter account

What could I do on Twitter?
• Talk to users directly
• Spread word of your site
• Build a marketing asset

Why should I care about social Media like Twitter and Facebook?
• Over 600m social users
• 22% of all time online
• Impacts SEO
• Impacts credibility

Why is the Freshness of a website important?
• Positive effect on search
• Positive effect on users

Summary
Substantial amount of content
Occasionally shared socially
Writing is quite easy to understand
Quick to load
Analytics is used
Updated regularly

additionally some technical points for consideration for the SEO of the website

Will the points below be possible? I consider point 1, especially, to be very important in terms of the SEO of the site. The title of any page is agreed upon by SEO experts as the number 1 on-page ranking factor and having all pages ‘diluted’ with the standard index page title text cannot be beneficial for long-tail searches.

1, Is it possible to not have the main website title added to the end of the product name to form each page title (on every product page) Currently all page Titles on the products pages are made up of the product name + page title from ‘website promotion and marketing’ options.
This dilutes the page title unnecessarily and normally makes the title longer than the 60-70 chars that is recommended

2, There are a couple of html errors within the framework (not closing a specific function, not giving type type=”text/javascript” to the javascript function, incorrect parameter for align command, not closing a function). These are not user / admin accessible and was wondering if they would be easy to fix (we know that xhtml / css compliance is a small factor but better to comply than not and these may cause display probs on some browsers)

3, Additionally to point 1 I see that the description and keywords meta data has a similar setup whereby the main description and keywords are added on to the end of the individual descriptions and keywords, is there a way to change this or opt out of it.

If you wish to give us a call to follow up on any points, please do

SEO positive results

Here is my quotation for the idcphuket website recommended updates / rewrite / new look and seo project for your PADI IDC / diving website. Have given the list below to aweb copy expert to give me an idea of costings for the project to rewrite the site and perform SEO operations on it to optimise it as a standalone site and as one of your 3 sites.

Re-write of 22 pages to be totally unique content £350 (3-4 days work)
Update of website template to be the same as idcthailand.com £100* ** (2 days)
SEO optimization of site (on-site optimisation) £200 (3 days)
SEO off site work (1 day) £75

After the project the client stated:

I put “cheap padi idc” into Google and …. idcthailand.com was on the first page, idcphuket was on the second and indepth was on the third
I have noticed that idcthailand has started to rank higher than indepth a few months ago now, any idea why ?? I know that you have been working hard on both of them, I am just surprised that the normal strings I put in looking for indepth / competitors idcthailand is appearing higher.

I was astonished that idcphuket appeared on the second page I thought it had vanished completely, this is much better than I expected. In Google I just put:  “padi idc internship” and idcphuket came up on the second page ahead of indepth, didnt expect this but its good I have my sites ranking highly.
I don’t believe this, I searched for ‘padi idc Phuket’ in Google  All 3 domains come up on the first page, this is an excellent result

Idcphuket is 3rd
Indepth is 4th
Idcthailand is 8th

Great Google results, What have you been doing wonder boy?
I have lots of business and multiple inquires so far this year, about 80%  I think from indepth and a few from idcthailand, which is very, very good. At least the websites seem to be doing OK so it’s not that bad for me. Had lunch with the examiners, and they said that IE numbers so far are normal this year, 33 on the IE this evening, and that’s with zero candidates from me. Thanks for the hard work !!

Anyway just a random comment, not sure if I am going to work tonight or not, but if not I am still planning 3 or 4 days just on website work next week

Website Promotion in Essex

Posted on October 19th, 2011 by James  |  Comments Off

We love helping local Essex based companies to promote their website and have loads of examples of real life successes where companies have trusted us to improve their website to make it rank higher in Google and to increase their visitor numbers, recently sent this to a client after we investigated their website.

We had chance to get the admin details from  your previous website designers in Billericay and spent time investigating your site. Looked at the website code and setup including your WordPress Blog and its setup.

I believe we can improve the site and can increase the sites visibility in the search engines which will improve your site inquries and as such your business. If you are interested in promoting your website, we would be happy to take on that project.  We talked about your website and how we can promote it in the search engines for you, I also mentioned that the site could do with some updates including new text, images and we will need new content (webcopy / text) to ensure your site gets more visibility and listed in all the search engines and ranked accordingly.

There is plenty to do on it to improve your sites ‘search friendliness’. Its search positioning currently does not represent the quality of the site and as such would think big gains in your visitor numbers and search positions could be made.

During the seo project we will identify 10 target search terms and agree them with you before we optimise the site

Copied Text

Posted on October 15th, 2011 by James  |  Comments Off

Previously when we found that people copied the text on some of our websites we sent out a similar email to the one below, but now we are happy for competitors to copy our text as we know that they can never rank higher than us by using our text and, as in the case below, where our links were copied also; this is actually a positive SEO benefit to us.

Our Message to another Essex Website Design Company when they copied our text:

It has been brought to our attention that you have copied a page from our website, very unprofessionally may I add. Please remove immediately. Please also note that you are no longer welcome in to our offices to ‘copy’ anything else you had in mind. I mistakenly welcomed you and thought you was genuine, clearly not. Here are the links, but I’m sure you know them already. Please refrain from replying with a poor excuse we’re not interested we just don’t appreciate copycat marketing.

Reply from Essex Website Design Company

Thank you for your e-mail below, I have looked at the links that you have pasted below, and you are 100% correct that this is your work, if you are interested in knowing how they came to be there I am more than happy to tell you the honest truth, because:

  1. I have NEVER plagiarised anyone’s work
  2. If I did I certainly would done it better than the applying quality pop-up which you have pointed out
  3.  I do NOT offer to beat anyone’s price I have never and never will play the “my Website Design and SEO is  cheaper than yours game” the information in the pop-up boxes is simply NOT true as I DO NOT OFFER THAT !!!!

What I am assuming has happened again is that my SEO / webmaster has once again been overzealous and has added this to my website without me asking him to or waiting for my approval to make such a change. I have just found out from another source that he has done several other things to my website in the past couple of weeks which are actually against Google Webmaster / W3C standards so I am having to explain a similar story to Google and explain to him once again never to change code or text to my any of my websites without my permission.

As I said I simply do not make the same offer that you are offering, and if I did copy it, I would have done so, so that it at least matched my website design, this as you pointed out, is an appalling copy and I simply would never have allowed work that bad on any of my websites.

Regarding your Essex Website Design Offices restriction of visiting rights, that is obviously your choice and we are more than happy to accede to your wishes, but I can assure you we are very genuine and honest people. Neither my fiancée nor myself had ever gone into your premises with the idea of “copying” any of your work or ideas.

I can certainly understand your anger, but I can only say that this is the first I have ever seen of these links and on top of that, as I have repeatedly pointed out, you are talking about an offer which I do not offer, and I do not copy anyone’s work or marketing although I have gotten used to it myself over the years as people constantly copy my text from my websites.

Once again I apologise for this occurrence, as soon as my webmaster is back from Holiday I will get these pop-up boxes removed immediately and will e-mail you as soon the pop-up boxes have been removed.

We have never been “ungenuine” in any of our dealings with you at all and we were actually enjoying getting to know you. I hope once you anger has died down, that when we meet again, as we bound to within the Essex Website Design community, that we will at least be able to talk sociably.

Get website links from your suppliers

Posted on October 8th, 2011 by James  |  Comments Off

Its good for your website’s promotion to have your website link to from related websites, you can use the text below to email your business contacts / suppliers to request to them that they link to your website:
We are in the process of having our website updated and revamped and wondered if you would be happy to have reciprocal links with ourselves. (Either on your links or your recommended suppliers page)
Many of you already are on our links page but we are aiming to have a nice comprehensive list so others of you can be added if you want.
We would also appreciate you putting our company link onto your website. Attached is ‘link text’* and our logo for the link.
If you could let us know that would be great
*link text – this link text is important and we can supply this to our clients to pass on.
