Webdesign Work Placements

Posted on February 9th, 2011 by james  |  Comments Off

Got 3 emails today requesting work placements (from the same Uni) we would like to give people the opportunity to learn new skills but when you approach a website design company its a great idea to have websites that you can show your work, actually why don’t Universities allocate a website and webspace to every student? would make sense to me.

Here’s what we got sent
I am currently a second year student studying a Web Design degree at University, I have been given the opportunity to take up a 12 month placement. I believe this will enable me to improve and use my skills that I have gained in a professional environment and develop them further. I am keen to learn new aspects of any area within web design and can quickly apply them to the appropriate tasks. I always look forward to a challenge and can work well under pressure.

My interests have always heavily been in designing and creating new effective work pieces. I really enjoy learning new skills and applying them in day to day life improving my efficiency at work. I enjoy keeping fit and being part of a team; I often play netball as part of a small team of friends. I have strong leadership and team skills which I feel will allow me to progress quickly in a professional environment.

We simply want to know what the student offer us and what will you expect from us? If you have a website with links to all your work that would be just perfect also.

Really love this excellent overview from a CV
With attributes that most employers would value, I show interest in most tasks I undergo and always do them with enthusiasm.

As a keen learner of new skills, I have an open mind to all technologies and new technologies I am also often intrigued by other programming languages similar to the ones I am learning now.

I’m particularly interested in this field because it relates to my current Web Programming studies at University. I am keen to learn more and keen to gain experience in the Web industry.

I get along with most people and I am capable of achieving my set goals and ambitions through diligently learning. As a person who adapts well to surroundings, when circumstances change, I change with them.

We will always talk to people that want to work with us to create delicious websites and often get asked what information to sent to us in a covering letter, the example below will give you a good idea of what will be needed for a covering letter to be sent with your full CV.

I finished studying BSc (HONS) Computer Science at Anglia Polytechnic University in Cambridge in 2007 and achieved a Class 2:1

I have been working as a junior web developer where I have been maintaining and updating web sites on a daily basis. This involved ensuring the site is fully functional and implementing any changes needed to fix errors using Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2005, IIS7, CodeSmith as well as creating advertising html eshots for clients and sending them out to a database of 90,000 job applicants.

During this time I have developed my knowledge of these programs and working with C#. This has also given me experience of working with and updating a live commercial site.

In my spare time I have been further developing my skills in asp.net C# & SQL through books and the internet. I have written a DVD ecommerce website, and a creative promotional and networking site which I would be willing to show at a later date.

I am interested in further self improvement and am willing to learn new skills through training, either in the work environment or in a formal course environment.

I am now looking for a job in a web development team to further my knowledge of this industry and improve my programming skills.

I was wondering if you had any positions that I would be suitable for or if you haven’t I would be grateful if you could keep my details and let me know if a position comes available. I have attached my CV to this email. I will welcome the opportunity to discuss any relevant post and my own background in more detail, and would be available for an interview at any time.

Our Website Standards and Company Ethos

Posted on March 4th, 2010 by james  |  Comments Off

Recently been talking to one of the guys here at Delicious Webdesign about the standards and ethos of the company so wanted to get a few down for reference about us:

We build sites that work for our client’s clients and customers.
Every site we build needs to be a bit special and ‘different’.
Standards Standards Standards ! all sites need to be W3C xhtml / css compliant.
All sites need to be checked for dead links and html errors before being put live
Spell check all webcopy (from client or from webcopy specialist)
Always give more than someone expects.
We aim to use tableless / css designs where possible.
Flash is nice !? but should be used sparingly on banners / headers.
All website are build in a search engine friendly manner from the start
Semantic Markup is practised (correct use of headers)
We dont want to win website design awards but we want our clients to earn money from their website
We believe in a ‘holistic’ approach to website design, dont sacrifice one aspect to the cost of another.
Create the site for people not search engines
Remember that search engines will decide if the site is a hit or a miss though !
Content is the most important part of every website
Ensure the content is signposted correctly with good navigation / anchor text
Images used should be optimised / labeled corrected and represent what we want to say
We are only as good as our last website
Customer referrals are what we strive to get, todays client will turn into tomorrow’s referrer, fingers crossed anyway.
Dont spent time doing what isnt needed, do whats needed first.
We want lifelong relationships with our clients not one-night stands.
Our prices are set to attract customers, deliver more than they expect for less than they expect to pay.
Advise on the best practises.
Give advice openly and honestly, as you would like to receive it yourself.
If a client wants something that isnt in their best long term interest, advice against it even if it means a financial sacrifice (no full flash sites :) )
Check existing images and text for duplication from other sites.
Code for and check for browser compatibility before website launch.
Expect website revisions, we want the client love love their website not just put up with it.
A website is for life, it grows, evolves, matures and eventually tries to dominate its ‘niche’
Be proud of our work.
